Definitions Flashcards
Define - Activation energy
Activation energy is the minimum amount of energy that particles must possess for a reaction to occur
Define - enthalpy change
Enthalpy change is heat change measured under constant pressure
Define - Standard enthalpy change of formation
The standard enthalpy change when one mole of a compound is formed from it’s constituent element under standards conditions, all reactants and products in their standard states
Define - Standard enthalpy change of combustion
Standard enthalpy change of comubstion is the standard enthalpy change when one mole of a compound is completely burnt in oxygen, all reactants and products in their standard states
Define - Hess’s Law
Hess’s law states that the total enthalpy change for a reaction is independent of the route by which it has taken place, providing the initial and final conditions are the same
Define - Standard enthalpy of atomisation
The standard enthalpy change when one mole of atoms in their standard state are converted to one mole of gaseous ions
Define - first ionisatiom energy
The first ionisation energy is the energy required to remove one mole of electrons from one mole of atoms to form one mole of singley charged positive ions
Define - second ionisation energy
Second ionisation energy is the energy required to remove an electron each from one mole of singely charged positive ions, to form a mole of negatives ion with a charge of +2 each
Define - standard enthalpy of hydration
The standard enthalpy change when one mole of ionic compound is completely surrounded by water molecules
Define - standard lattice enthalpy of dissociation
The standard enthalpy change when one mole of solid ionic compound is converted, dissociated, into its gaseous ions
Define - Standard lattice enthalpy of formation
Standard lattice enthalpy of formation is the standard enthalpy change when one mole of solid ionic compound is formed from it’s gaseous ions under standard conditions
