Definitions Flashcards
Scalar
A quantity with magnitude only.
Vector
A quantity with magnitude and direction.
Contact force
A force exerted when objects are physically touching.
Non contact force
A force exerted when objects are physically separated.
Centre of mass
A point where the weight of an object may be considered to act. Usually in the middle of the object.
Work done
The energy Transferred by a force.
Extension
How much an object has increased in length.
Moment
The turning Effect of the force
Distance
How far an object moves
Displacement
Distance and direction from the start point to the finish point, in a straight line.
Speed
How far an object moves per second
Eg 5m per second
Velocity
Speed in a specific direction
Acceleration
The rate of change of velocity
Acceleration due to gravity
9.8 m/s2
Terminal velocity
The velocity when the resultant force equals 0.
Eg when the air resistance is equal to the gravitational acceleration. Both act against each other and the resultant force is zero.
