definitions Flashcards
definition of a physical property
a characteristic/definition of a substance that may help to identify it.
qualitative
involves the five senses (no measurements) smell, sight, hear, taste and touch
quantitative
involves a measurement (numerical value) temperature, height, mass, volume, density, solubility, length and time.
malleability
it can be hammered/bent into different shapes.
ductility
a solid that can be pulled into wires.
melting point
the temperature at which a solid begins to melt.
boiling point
the temperature at which a liquid begins to boil.
hardness
the measure of the resistance of a solid to being scratched/ dented.
crystal form
solid forms in which one can see a definite structure of cubes or blocks with a regular pattern.
solubility
the ability of a substance to dissolve in a solvent such as water. salt is soluble while pepper is insoluble.
viscosity
a measure of how easily a liquid flows: the thicker the liquid, the slower the liquid, the more viscous the liquid is.
definition of chemical property
describes the behaviour of a substance as it becomes a new substance. Normally with the help of an acid or heat.
combustibility
the ability of a substance to react quickly with oxygen to produce heat and light.
a chemical change
a change in the starting substance or substances and the production of one or more new substances.
