Definitions Flashcards
Define a scalar.
A quantity with a magnitude but NO direction.
Define a vector.
A quantity with both a magnitude and a direction.
Define speed.
The rate of change of position
Define velocity
The rate of change of displacement
Define acceleration
The rate of change of velocity
Define weight.
The gravitational force upon an object.
Define friction.
The force that opposes motion.
Define Newton’s First Law.
If the sum of the forces is zero, the object will move at constant speed (or be stationary).
Define Newton’s Second Law.
The acceleration of an object is proportional to the net force on that object.
Define Newton’s Third Law
Every force has an equal, but opposite, force acting in opposition to it.
Define Work
A transfer of energy
Define an unbalanced force
The total force on an object
Define braking distance
The distance a car travels from the moment the brakes are applied to when the car comes to a full stop
Define thinking distance
The distance a car travels from the moment the driver sees the obstacle to when the brakes are applied.
Define the stopping distance
Thinking distance + Braking distance
