Definitions Flashcards
The mass defect
The mass defect of a nucleus is the difference between the total mass of the separate nucleons and the mass of the combined nucleons
One atomic mass unit
it is defined as being equal to one twelfth of the mass of a carbon 12 atom
The mass excess
It refers to an atomic nucleus and it is the difference between mass of a nucleus and the sum of masses of all the protons and neutrons
Binding energy
It is the energy equivalent of the mass defect of a nucleus
It is the energy required to separate to infinity all the nucleons of the nucleus
Binding energy (per nucleon)
It is defined as the total energy needed to completely separate all the nucleons in a nucleus divided by the number of nucleons in the nucleus
