Definitions Flashcards
Flint glass
Inexpensive glass with low resistance to heat and chemicals
Volumetric pipette
Pipette for measuring anything that requires precise measurement
Erlenmeyer flask
Flat-bottomed, conical flask used for mixing
Serological pipette
Pipette that is graduated down to the tip of apparatus and used to measure viscous liquids
Borosillicate glass
Non-reactive, highly thermal-resistant glass with low alkali content; PYREX and KIMAX
Polypropylene
Lightweight plastic that can withstand heat sterilization
Safety bulb
Serves as a vacuum source for filling reagents through a pipette
Water bath
Container filled with heated water and used to incubate samples in water at a constant temperature over longer periods of time
Graduated cylinder
Long straight-sided container with calibrated markings with a high degree of accuracy → used for 24hr urine volumes
Beaker
Wide, straight-sided cylindrical vessel used for general mixing and reagent preparation
pH meter
Device which measures hydrogen ion concentration
TD
To deliver → last drop is not blow out (gravity is used)
TC
To contain → last drop remaining needs to be blown ou
Autoclave
Sterilization chamber using steam under pressure
Incubator
An enclosed apparatus providing a controlled environment which may grow bacteria
Microtome
Instrument used for cutting extremely thin sections of tissues for viewing under a microscope in pathology
Graduated pipette
Cylindrical tube used to deliver a measured volume of liquid between two calibration/graduation marks on the tubev
Analytical balance
Instrument used to weigh substances to a high degree of precision and accuracy
Mohr pipette
Graduated pipette that is calibrated between two marks on the stem
Centrifuge
Closed-chambered instrument used to separate specimens
Glacial acetic acid
Acetic acid free from water and stored at room temperature in a safety cabinet
BSP
Body substance precautions; regulations state that all specimens, fluids, tissues, smears, blood, serum, plasma, swabs, etc must be considered potentially infectious
Venous stasis
Impairment or stopping of blood flow
Distilled H2O
Water that is purified and non-ionized → used in the autoclave
