Definitions Flashcards
Work
It is the product of the force and the distance moved by the force in the direction of the force
Power
It is defined as the rate of change of doing work
Potential energy
It is energy stored which is available to do work
Gravitational potential energy
It is the energy possessed by a mass by virtue of it’s height in a gravitational field
Elastic Potential Energy
It is the energy possessed by a body by virtue of it’s deformation
Kinetic Energy
It is the energy possessed by a body by virtue of it’s motion
Efficiency
Efficiency of a system is the ratio of useful energy output from the system to the total energy input
Energy output/Energy input * 100
One kilowatt-hour
It is the energy expended when work is done at the rate of 1 kilowatt for a time of 1 hour
Internal energy of a sysytem
It is the sum of a random distribution of the kinetic and potential energies associated with the molecules of the system
Internal Energy of an Ideal Gas
In an ideal gas there is no intermolecular force of attraction which leads to no potential energy. Therefore only kinetic energy contribute to the internal energy
Work Done
It is when a force moves the point at which it acts in the direction of the force
