Auschwitz
One of the largest concentration camps from the Holocaust during World War II
Concentration camp
A relatively small area where large numbers of people are deliberately imprisoned, sometimes to provide forced labour
Dehumanisation
The denial of humanness to other people; to deprive of human qualities
Discrimination
The unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people eg. race, gender, age
Eugenics
The science of improving a population to increase the occurrence of desirable characteristics
Euthanasia
The painless killing of a patient suffering from an incurable and painful disease
Extermination camp
German camps designed and built by Nazi Germany to systemically kill millions through extreme work under starvation conditions
Final solution
The Nazi policy of exterminating European Jews
Genocide
The deliberate killing of a large group of people, especially those of a particular nation or ethnic group
Ghetto
A part of a city, especially a slum area, occupied by a minority group or groups
Holocaust
Destruction or slaughter on a mass scale; a Jewish sacrificial offering which was burnt completely on an altar
Liberation
The act of setting someone free from imprisonment, slavery or oppression
Nazi Party
A political group that ruled Germany between 1933 and 1945
Pogrom
A violent riot aimed at massacre or persecution of an ethnic or religious group
Police state
A totalitarian state controlled by a political police force that secretly supervises the citizens’ activities
Prejudice
Preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience
Racism
The belief that all members of each race possess certain characteristics or abilities specific to that race
Refugee
A person who has been forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution or natural disaster
Resistance
The refusal to accept or comply with something
