Definitions Flashcards
Function
the action or use for which something has been designed.
Aesthetics
how something looks, particularly.
Collaborate
to work together with others on a project for a common goal.
Specifications
detailed instructions on how something should be done or produced.
Constraint
a limitation or control that must be followed.
Criteria
a list of requirements and specifications.
Ergonomics
the science of designing machines, products, and systems to maximise the safety, comfort, and efficiency of the people who use them (and minimise harm or physical damage)
Environment
total of surrounding things, conditions or influences; especially the combination of external physical conditions that affect and influence our growth, development, and survival.
Computer Aided Design (CAD)
an automated system for the design, drafting, and display of graphic information.
Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM)
a computer program that makes manufacturing data from CAD drawings to automate the manufacture of a product by a computer controlled machine.
Computer Numeric Control (CNC)
the computer control of machine tools for the purpose of (repetitively) manufacturing complex parts for a product.
Action Plan
a list of tasks to be completed as part of a project.
Efficiency
ratio of output or work done to energy used or input supplied.
Occupational Overuse Syndrome (OOS)
term for a range of conditions, including injury, mainly discomfort or pain in muscles or soft tissue.
Sustainable
causing little or no damage to the environment or not using finite resources and therefore able to continue for a long time.
Anneal
to make metal or glass soft by heating and then cooling it slowly.
Australian Standard
detailed technical documents developed by Standards Australia to ensure quality and common understanding.
Ethics
a system of accepted beliefs which control behaviour, especially one based on morals.
Appropriate
suitable for an occasion or use.
Hazard
anything that can potentially cause harm or loss.
Entrepreneurial activity
making ideas for products or businesses into productive and profitable businesses.
Concept Board
a cognitive organiser used to clarify the aspects of the concept that will be important to the final design.
Paremeter
a limit or boundary that defines work.
Target Market
the sector of a market that a product is being produced for and marketed to.
Primary Research
research conducted by going directly to the source, such as interviewing, experimenting, and collecting and analysing statistics.
Secondary Research
facts or data obtained from other than the original source, such as books, other people’s reports or the internet.
Demographic
a section of the population grouped according to common characteristics such as age, income or gender.
Statutory Authority
organisation established under an act for public purpose.
Control Measures
a set of guidelines or rules to maintain certain standards and consistency.
Biodegradable
able to decay naturally and harmlessly.
Gantt Chart
a detailed grid which displays the tasks to be undertaken and time allocated, and maps these on a specified timeline.
Finance Plan
a detailed report of the resources used in a project with costs applied.
Automation
mechanical controlling of machinery for speed and accuracy.
Orthographic
the drawing technique of representing lines, surfaces, or solids in one or more imaginary planes that are at right angles to one another.
Standardisation
the process of establishing a technical standard to ensure compatibility of production assemblies.
Intellectual Property
a product of the intellect that has commercial value, including copyrighted property such as literary or artistic works, patents, business methods and industrial processes.
Patent
a legal document granted by the government that gives an inventor exclusive rights to make, use and sell an invention (for a specified period)
Copyright
legal rights of artistic ownership and integrity.
Forging
the process of forming metal by heating it in a forge (furnace) and beating or hammering it into shape.
Rolling
the fabricating process where metal, glass, paper or plastic material is passed through a pair of rolls.
Casting
the process of making objects by pouring molten material into moulds, allowing it to solidify in the shape inside the mould and then removing it from the mould.
Extrusion
the process of shaping material, such as aluminium, by forcing it to flow through a shaped opening.
Calendering
a process where polymers are formed into membranes or sheets by passing material between rotating steel rollers.
Blow Moulding
a technique used in the plastics and polymers industries to create hollow containers using compressed air to push material to fill the chamber of a hollow mould.
Custom Production
handmade, one off production of products.
3D Printing
the building of physical models, directly from Computer Aided Design (CAD) data.
