Definitions Flashcards
Temperature
a measure of the average energy of the particles that make up a substance.
Latent heat
During a change in state when there is no temperature change.
Calorimeter
are special containers used to measure the exchange of heat when substances are mixed.
RSI
Thermal resistance of a type of insulation
Kinetic molecular theory
The theory that helps to explain temperature, heat and thermal energy.
Wave
Can be described as a transfer of energy in the form of a disturbance often medium such as water
Surface wave
Particles of the medium vibrate parallel and perpendicular to the direction of the wave and produce a circular motion
Wavelength
The distance from the midpoint of one compression to another or one rarefraction to another
Period
The time required to complete one cycle (T)
Principle of superposition
Wherever two waves pass through each other, the resulting disturbance at a given point in the medium can be found by adding the individual displacements of each wave
Reflection
Occurs when a wave strikes a boundary between the two media and the wave bounces off
Plane mirror
A plane mirror is a planer (flat) reflecting surface off of which specular reflection occurs.
A place mirror creates a virtual, same size, laterally inverted, or erect.
Converging mirror
Has a concave reflecting surface
Diverging mirror
Has a convex reflecting surface
