A system enforcing strict obedience to authority at the expense of personal freedom.
Autonomy

Bond
The contract accompanying a loan; the creditor is promised that they will be paid back at some point in the future and in the meantime an annual interest is paid on the amount lent.
Bundesrat
Representatives from the 25 state governments that made up the Kaiserreich; also known as the Upper House.
Burgfriede
Literally means ‘castle peace’ and refers to medieval times when conflicts between individuals were forbidden within an area controlled by a castle; it thus came to mean a ‘state of truce’.
Cartels
Associations of producers in similar trades or processes.
Centralised planning/Command economy
Communist system whereby the means of production are owned by the public and economic activity is controlled by a central authority that determines production targets and allots raw materials to factories and enterprises.
Civil service
The government employees responsible for putting decisions and laws into effect.
Conservative
Averse to change or innovation and holding traditional values.

Dawes Plan
Formulated in 1924 to ease hyperinflation in Weimar Germany; it was name after the American Charles Dawes, who was head of the committee.
Decentralisation
Dispersing power and authority away from the central government.
Deficit-financing
The practice of spending more government money than is received from taxation; the difference is made up by borrowing.
Degeneracy
Being corrupt and without morality or virtue.
Democratic constitution
A system of government that’s allows the members of the state the right to choose those that govern them.
Diet
Parliament in Prussia
Diocese
A unit of Church administration that was part of an ecclesiastical area headed by a bishop or archbishop.
Executive
Comprised of those responsible for putting decisions and laws into effect - the Chancellor, ministers and the ‘civil service’.
