Define social psychology
The examination of how individuals interact with one another and how groups affect behaviour
Define obedience
Obeying direct orders from an authoritative figure, it is a form of social influence and is needed within society
Define conforming
Obeying orders which are against the individuals own inclinations although not in order to match the behaviour of the majority
Define compliance
To follow along with something while not necessarily in agreement (often to peers rather than authoritative figures). Compliance is referred to by Milgram
Define internalisation
Obeying orders from an authoritative figure with agreement
Define autonomous state
People see their action as voluntary and of free will, their conscience is operative
Define agentic state
People see themselves as agents of others and therefore their conscience is not operative
Define moral strain
Experiencing distress due to the action of something which is perceived as immoral to the individual
Define social categorisation
Categorising ourselves as members of a particular group; these categories are ones we learn to be important
Define social identification
Adopting the identity of the group which we categorised ourselves into; adopting consistent behaviours, attitudes and behaviours to distinguish from non-members
Define social social comparison
Comparing your group favourably to others in order to maintain self-esteem, in and out groups are measured against each other where the out-group is devalued
Define social categorisation
Categorising ourselves as members of a particular group; these categories are ones we learn to be important
Define social identification
