Definitions Flashcards
Isolated Diene
The double bonds are separated by more than one single bond C=C-C-C=C
Conjugated Diene
The double bonds are separated by one single bond C=C-C=C
Cumulated Diene
The double bonds are not separated by any single bonds -C=C=C- (Allene)
Lewis Acid
Electron acceptor (electrophile)
Lewis Base
Electron donor (nucleophile)
Inductive Effect
When a carbocation is more stable because other carbons are sharing electrons thru sigma bonds (covalent)
Torsional Strain
When conformations of torsion angles between adjacent bonds are other than 60 degrees. A type of steric strain.
Steric Strain
van der Waals forces: when bulky groups repel each other/ get in the way
Angle Strain
When a bond angle is tighter than is should be (less than 109.5 in alkanes)
Hyperconjugation
pi bond interaction with adjacent bonds
