Definitions Flashcards
Describe a solid
It retains it’s shape, does not flow and the molecules are flocked in place
Describe a liquid
Takes the shape of its container, it flows and the molecules are less tightly packed, not easily compressible
Describe a gas
Fills the shape or volume of the container holding it, lots of space between the molecules and easily compressed
What is a molecule ?
Two or more atoms joined together forming either a covalent or ionic bond.
What is melting point ?
The point at which a solid turns into a liquid
What is boiling point ?
The point at which a liquid turns into a gas
What is odour ?
Gas moving through the air to the nose which triggers a sense of smell
What is heat conductivity ?
The ability of a substance to transmit heat
What is electrical conductivity ?
The ability of a substance to conduct electricity
what is brittleness ?
a substance that breaks easily.
What is density
a measure of the mass of a substance to its volume
what is viscosity ?
The measure of the resistance of a fluid to changing its shape. Less viscous liquids move easily.
what is temperature
The measure of the heat or coldness of a substance usually measured in degrees Celsius.
What is oxidisation ?
A chemical combination of a substance with oxygen - usually involves the atom or ion losing elctrons
Describe hard water
Contains calcium and magnesium ions. Hardness is based on the amount of calcium carbonate in the water and prevents soup lathering.
