Definitions Flashcards
What is an alkali
A soluble base that gives free hydrogen ions in a solution
What is a base
Compound that neutralises an acid
Salt
An ionic compound formed when the hydrogen of an atom is replaced by a metal ion
Ph
Potential hydrogen
Define an acid
A compound containing hydrogen that produces free h+ ions in a solution
Pure substance
Composed of only one type of atom.
Impure substance
Made of mixtures of elements, mixtures of compounds or mixtures
Element
A pure substance that cannot be simplified. They are made up of only one type of atom
Compound
A pure substance that can be simplified. Made up of two or more atoms chemically bonded in a fixed ratio
Mixture
Consists of a number of compounds. They are impure and not chemically joined in a fixed ratio
Particle theory of matter
All matter consists of many small particles that are in a continual state of motion. The degree to which the particles move is determined by the amount of energy they have
Covalent bond
When elements share electrons to gain full valence shells
Form between elements that are close together and on the right hand side of the periodic table
Ionic bond
The complete transfer of valence electrons between atoms
