Definitions Flashcards
What is an atom?
It is the smallest part of any substance & everything is made up of atoms
What is an element?
A substance that is made up of one type of atom
What are the properties of metals?
They are strong, have a high melting point, conduct heat & electricity, are malleable, shiny, solids at room temperature except mercury which is a liquid
What are the properties of non-metals?
They are brittle, have a low melting point, don’t conduct heat & electricity, dull & are solids, liquids & gasses
What is a compound?
A substance that is made up of two or more types of atom chemically joined
What’s a mixture?
An impure substance that is made up of two or more types of atoms mixed together but they are not chemically bonded.
What is a solvent?
A substance that you dissolve something into
What is a solute?
A substance that dissolves into a solvent
What is a solution?
It is the end mixture when you dissolve a solute into a solvent
What is filtration?
It’s a method used to separate a solid from a liquid
What is evaporation?
It is a method used to separate a soluble solid from a liquid when collecting the solid
What is distillation?
A method used to separate a soluble solid from a liquid when collecting a liquid.
What is chromatography?
It is a method used to separate different colours of dyes
What is magnetism?
It is used to separate a metal from any other substance or element that isn’t metal
