A feeling that arises from a concrete real danger.
Fear
An uncomfortable feeling that occurs in response to the fear of being hurt or losing something valued.
Arises from an ambiguous, unspecified cause or is disproportionate to the danger.
Anxiety
A person’s anxiety loses its link with precipitating circumstances or becomes excessive or maladaptive.

Behaviours such as physical fights, abusing substances, social withdrawal, and addictive behaviours.

Reviewing strengths and limitations realistically.
Setting short and long term goals.

Stress reduction techniques.

Defense mechanisms
Memory loss not caused by an organic problem, usually caused by an acute precipitating traumatic event.
Dissociative amnesia
Memory loss occurs for a specific time r/t the trauma.
Localized amnesia
Memory loss which is localized for a specific time with partial memory of events.
Selective Amnesia
A complete loss of memory of one’s past.
Generalized Amnesia
Memory loss begins at a particular point in time and continues to the present.
Continuous Amnesia
A disorder in which people while either maintaining their identity or adopting a new identity wander or take unexpected trips.
Precipitated by subacute, chronic stress.
Often ends abruptly.
Partial or complete amnesia for that period.
Dissociative Fugue
Persistent or recurrent feelings of being detached from one’s body or thoughts.
Feeling like they’re living in a dream but they know they’re not.
Results from emotional abuse in childhood.
Begins in adolescence.
Depersonalization Disorder
Multiple identities within one person.
Each personality has its own memory, value structure, behavioral pattern, and primary affective expression.
Has a partial awareness of the other identities.
Severe, sadistic, sexual child abuse interspersed with periods of expressions of care and concern from the abuser.
Uses the defense mechanisms of repression and dissociation.
