What’s biographical disruption?
The many ways in which the experience of pain and/or illness can alter a person’s sense of self and their personal and social relationships.
What’s an illness narrative?
A story people tell in order to give meaning and structure to their experience of pain and suffering.
What’s illness behaviour?
How people respond to their symptoms.
What’s the sick role?
The social process that surrounds being sick I.e the customs, rules, duties and obligations that emerge for the person who is ill and those around them.
What’s a chronic illness?
A long-term disorder that disrupts peoples lives.
What’s stigma?
It refers to a mark or an attribute that society seems different/dangerous/unacceptable. Individuals or groups who come to be identified with this attribute are treated differently by society and tend to experience feelings of shame and blame as a result.
What’s prejudice?
A negative attitude that an individual or group hold about another person or group.
What’s discrimination?
Acting in a way that treats people in an unequal way.
What’s self-stigma?
When people are aware that their condition is stigmatised by society they tend to internalise/accept it’s associated negative stereotypes. Can lead to lower self esteem as well as a self limiting/self handicapping behaviour eg avoiding socialising.
