definitions Flashcards
Active rest
the period of time that involves activities other than their main sport. Eliminates weight training. Low key physically and mentally. Restoration/Recovery, but still neuromuscular
Aerobic
With oxygen, for longer sustained bouts of energy. Jogging, swimming, cycling.
Anaerobic
Without oxygen, relies on energy readily available in muscle tissue, and ability to resupply energy without oxygen. Short bursts of energy like weight training.
Concentric Contraction
muscle contraction where muscle shortens. (Shortening biceps brachii when pulling weight up during arm curl)
Dynamic Contraction
muscle contraction that involves range of motion (movement) and either concentric or eccentric contraction. Not Isotonic
Eccentric Contraction
muscle lengthens. lengthening of biceps brachii while lowering weight in arm curl. Negative movement.
Extension
straightening of a joint, opening the joint angle, opening the angle between body parts.
Flexion
bending at the joint, decreasing the joint angle, closing the angle between body parts.
Grip
Wrap around(safest), thumbless, hooked(olympic lifts), overhand, underhand, alternate.
Isokinetic
on machines, accommodating resistance, excellent for rehabilitation, no eccentric work, no increase in limb velocity.
Isometric
muscle contraction with no movement involved, but heat is generated. Static. (pushing against a building)
Isotonic
muscle contraction with range of motion involved. Dynamic. Same Tension.
Muscle Endurance
the capacity of a muscle to exert force against a resistance for an extended period of time. How may repetitions. dynamic=movement. Static=how long can hold. enhanced by high rep, low weight.
Negative Reps
workout when lifter performs eccentric contractions. Only experienced lifters.
Plyometrics
exercise that bridge gap between strength and power. develop reflex action. jumping, bounding, medicine balls.
