Semiotics
Deeper meanings - the study of signs (what is denoted or connoted by a scene)
Mise-en-scene
Everything that is in a shot - props, characters, lighting etc.
Denotation
What a picture is/what you can see
Connotation
What you attribute to a certain image (red = danger/love)
Polysemy
When an image has multiple meanings/connotations
Cultural capital
Different cultures have different perceptions on what they watch and enjoy
Preferred reading
The intended view of the text/film
Oppositional reading
Viewer disagrees with the intended view of a film/gets a different reading of the film from their position
Active viewing
When you choose what you watch because you enjoy it
Passive viewing
You watch something because you have been told to or everyone else is watching it
Antagonist
Someone who is actively opposed or hostile to stop someone or something
Protagonist
The good guy, champion of a cause
Foreshadowing
Suggesting what might happen in the future
Voyeurism
Spying on something without that something knowing you are watching
Mode of address
How the text speaks to the audience
Dramatic irony
Audience knows something that the characters don’t
Pan
Turning the camera left to right and vice versa
