Crane shot
A shot taken from a special device called a crane
deep-focus
a technique of photography that permits all distance planes to remain clearly in focus, from close-up ranges to infinity
establishing shot
usually an extreme long/ long shot offered at the beginning of a scene, providing the viewer with the context of the subsequent closer shots
eye-level shot
the placement of the camera approximately one and a half to two metres from the ground, corresponding to the height of an observer on the scene
genre
a recognizable type of movie, characterized by certain pre-established conventions
icon
a person or an image that has acquired a widely understood cultural significance
iconography
the use of a well-known cultural symbol or complex of symbols in an artistic representation
intrinsic
an unobtrusive area of the film image that nonetheless compels our most immediate attention b/c of its dramatic/ contextual importance
jump cut
an abrupt transition b/w shots in which the second shot is taken from an angle only slightly different from the 1st so characters/ objects seem to “jump”
mise en scène
the arrangement of visual weights and movements w/in a given space
montage
an editing technique that stresses the dynamic relations b/w shots
montage sequence
a transitional sequence of rapidly edited images used to suggest the lapse of time/ the passaging of events
motif
any unobtrusive technique, object, or thematic idea systematically repeated throughout a film
nondiegetic
refers to a sound/ image that has no source in the fictional world of the film
pan
short for panorama, a revolving horizontal movement of the camera from left to right or vice versa
plot
the arrangement of story events in the order in which they appear in the film
rack focusing
the blurring of focal planes in sequence, forcing the viewer’s eyes to travel w/ those areas of an image that remain in sharp focus
reestablishing shot
a return to an initial establishing shot w/in a scene, acting as a reminder of the physical context of the closer shots
sequence shot
a single lengthy shot, involving complex staging and camera movements
shot
+2 shots edited together, often depicting a convo and using over the shoulder compositions
story
all the events that we see, hear about, or infer in a fiction film in there order in which they are supposed to have happened
tilt
a vertical panning shot in which the camera moves on its axis up or down
