Rhyme
Words that sound similar E.G. Book and cook
Limerick
A five line poem, usually silly or funny that uses a specific rhyme or rhythm pattern. E.g. King Lear by Shakespeare
Rhythm
The amount of beats in a line, made using syllables. E.g I went to the shop, has five syllables
Imagery
The picture created for the reader by the poet E.g. A picture associated with a paragraph
Stanza
A verse in poetry-a paragraph in a poem
Theme
The key idea explored by a writer in a poem, play or story. There is often more than one theme in a piece of writing E.g. Sad, happy
Onomatopoeia
A word that sounds like what it’s describing. E.g. BOOM
Haiku
A poem usually about nature. It is three lines long. The first and third lines have five syllables, while the second line has seven.E.g. Basho Matsuo wrote the old silent pond
Simile
A comparison between two things using the words ‘like’, ‘as’ or ‘than’. E.G. Like a thunder bolt
Alliteration
Using words that begin with the same letters or sounds.E.g. Cat and hat
Metaphor
Comparing two thing without using the words ‘like’, ‘as’ or ‘than’.E.g.
Narrator
A voice or character that tells the story
Setting
The time and place of the story
Character
A person in the story
Protagonist
The main character of a story
