Definitions Flashcards
Aeronautical Information Publication (AIP)
A publication containing information of a lasting character essential to air navigation
Aeronautical information circular (AIC)
A circular containing information that does not qualify for the origination of a NOTAM or for inclusion into the AIP but relates to flight safety, air nav etc.
AIP Supplement (AIP SUP)
Temporary changes to the information contained in the AIP
Airmanship
The consistent use of good judgement and well developed knowledge, skills and attitudes to accomplish flight objectives
Alternate aerodrome
An aerodrome to which an aircraft may proceed when it becomes impossible or in advisable to proceed to or land at the aerodrome of intended landing.
Cloud ceiling
The height above the surface of the base of the lowest cloud below 20 000 ft covering more that half the sky.
What is a CTA?
Control Area.
Established above 1 or more TMA’s at busy centres
All CTA’s in South Africa are Class C
Extend up to and including Flight Level 195
Controlled airspace
An airspace of defined dimensions within which air traffic control service is provided to IFR and VFR flights.
Control zone (CTR)
A controlled airspace extending upwards from the surface to a specified up a limit.
Co-pilot
A licensed type-rated pilot required by these regulations to serve in any piloting capacity other than pilot-in-command
Current flight plan
The flight plan including changes, if any brought about by subsequent clearances
What constitutes a ‘day’ in flying?
15 minutes before sunrise to 15 minutes after sunset.
A ‘flight’ means…
From the moment the aircraft commences it’s take off until the moment it completes it’s next landing.
‘Flight Time’ means…
The total time from when the aeroplane first moves for the purpose of taking off until the moment it stops at the end of the flight.
An infant is considered…
A passenger who has not reached his/her second birthday
Instrument flight time means…
The time during which the aircraft is piloted solely by reference to instruments and without external reference points, whether under actual or simulated instrument flight conditions
Instrument Ground Time means…
Time during which a pilot is practicing, on the ground, simulated instrument flight training
Instrument Meteorology Conditions (IMC)
Atmospheric conditions expressed in terms of visibility and distance from cloud, or ceiling, less than the minimum prescribed for VFR flight
Maximum certificated mass means…
The maximum permissible mass shown in the flight manual or other document associated with the certificate of airworthiness at which an aircraft may commence it’s take off run under ISA
Maneuvering area is…
The part of an aerodrome to be used for take off and landing of aircraft and for the movement of aircraft associated with take off and landing, excluding aprons.
How many meters is a nautical mile?
1852 meters exactly
‘Night’ in aviation means…
A period from 15 min after sunset to 15 min before sunrise
What is a NOTAM?
A Notice to Airmen. Information to pilots that are short in duration/temporary
What is a Pilot in command?
The pilot responsible for the operation and safety of the aircraft in flight
What is a pilot in command under supervision?
The pilot in command is working under supervision
What is a Special VFR flight?
VFR flight authorized by ATC to fly within a control zone under meteorological conditions below VMC
What is a TMA?
Terminal Control Area.
Established at busy centres with a lot of IFR traffic
Usually positioned above 1 or more CTRs
All TMA’s in SA are class C
Visual Meteorological Conditions (VMC)
Atmospheric conditions expressed in terms of visibility, distance from the cloud or ceiling equal to or better than the minima prescribed for VFR flight.
