Definitions Flashcards
Chemical bond
The forces of attraction holding the particles together
Chemical bonding
The way in which particles join and combine with one another
Chemical structure
The arrangement of particles as a result of the bonding
Electronegativity
The ability of an atom to attract additional electrons to itself
Metallic bonds
The strong electrostatic attraction between the positively-charged metal cations and negatively-charge mobile valence electrons
Malleable - physical property
Can deform to absorb an impact
Ductile - physical property
Can be stretched to great lengths without breaking
Ionic bond
The strong electrostatic attractions between positively-charged ions and negatively charged ions
Covalent bonds
The strong electrostatic attraction between the nuclei of each atom for the shared pair of electrons
Sigma bond
Orbitals which overlap head-on/collinearly
Pi bond
P orbitals which overlap sideways/collaterally
Coordinate/dative bonds
Covalent bond formed when an atom donates a lone pair of electrons into an empty orbital of an electron deficient atom for sharing
Giant covalent structure
Atoms extensively bound together by strong covalent bonds
Allotrope
Different forms of an element in the same physical state. Similar chemical properties, different physical properties(FYI)
Simple covalent structure
Small, discrete molecules held together by weak intermolecular forces
