ABP
Able bodied person. A passenger that will assist the F/A in the event if an emergency
A-FA
(A) flight attendant position. Assigned to the forward position of the aircraft
AED
Automated external defibrillator. Designed to treat passengers who are experiencing sudden cardiac arrest
ATC
Air traffic control
AFT
The rear portion of the aircraft
Air Cargo
Air cargo is any mail, freight or express moving by air
Aircraft Left
The left side of the aircraft as you are in the cabin facing the cockpit. The captain’s seat is on the aircraft left.
Aircraft right
The right side of the aircraft as you are in the cabin facing the cockpit. The first officer’s seat is on the aircraft right.
B-FA
(B) flight attendant assigned to the aft section of the aircraft
Ballast
Every aircraft must be balanced in order to fly properly. Sometimes ballast (such as bags
of sand or gravel) is required to be placed on the aircraft in order to balance it.
Buddies
Persons that a flight attendant can assign to assist other guests in an emergency— usually when planning to evacuate the aircraft. For example, in an emergency the flight attendant may assign a “buddy” to an unaccompanied minor to help ensure the child gets off the aircraft.
Bulkhead
An upright partition separating compartments
Cabin
Area inside the aircraft where the passengers sit
CPT (captain)
Pilot ultimately in charge of the aircraft. Responsible for first officer and flight attendants
Carrier
A term used interchangeably with airline. Sometimes referred to as certificate referring to the airline’s operating certificate. Example: The Chautauqua certificate
