DEFINITIONS Flashcards
What is a sporozoite?
A daughter cell resulting from sporogony.
What is a trophozoite?
The active, feeding stage of a protozoan, in contrast to a cyst.
What is schizogony?
A form of asexual reproduction in which multiple mitoses occur, followed by simultaneous cytokinesis, resulting in many daughter cells at once.
What is a schizont?
In schizogony, it is when nuclear divisions have occurred but not cytokinesis.
What is a merozoite?
A daughter cell resulting from schizogony.
What are hemoflagellates?
Heterotrophic, eukaryotic, single-celled organisms.
What is heteroxenous?
A parasite that lives within more than one host during its life cycle.
What is monoxenous?
A parasite that lives within a single host during its life cycle.
What is a kinetoplast?
A dark staining mass of DNA within the single mitochondrion; situated at the base of the flagellum.
What is a kinetosome?
A centriole from which the axoneme arises.
What is an axoneme?
The core of a cilium or flagellum, composed of microtubules.
What is an undulating membrane?
A finlike ridge across the surface of the cell with axoneme.
What are the types of flagellates?
Amastigote, trypomastigote, epimastigote, and promastigote.
Where is the flagella located?
At the anterior part of the organism.
Where will you find epimastigote?
You will never find epimastigote in a human host, only in an insect vector.
