Common law
A legal system based on court decisions
Statute law
Law created by parliaments in the form of legislation
Remedy
A legal action that a court uses to enforce rights, impose penalties or compensate for harm
Personnel
A group of people who follow orders, usually within a company
Delegated legislation
Legal rules made to those whom Parliament has delegated authority (usually members of the executive branch eg: ministers)
Cabinet
A small group of the most important people in government who advise the prime minister on important decisions
Prerogative power
Special rights given to a head of state of government that don’t require approve from a legislature
Treaty
A formally concluded and ratified (confirmed) agreement between states
Diplomacy
The profession, activity or skill of managing international relations
Veto
A constitutional right to reject a decision or proposal made by a lawmaking body
Bill
A draft of a proposed law presented to parliament for discussion
Litigant
A person involved in a lawsuit
Plaintiff
A person who brings a case against another in a court of law (initiates a lawsuit)
Defendant
The party to a case against whom the action is brought
Prohibition
The act or practice of forbidding something by law
Ombudsman
An independent person who investigates and resolves complaints between parties
Prosection/crown/state/the people
The party bringing criminal charges to trial
Magistrate
A public official who presides (guidance) over law courts that deal with minor crimes or disputes
Registrar
Performs administrative functions eg: adjourning cases, scheduling hearings, etc
Indemnity
A contractual obligation of one party to compensate the loss incurred by another party
Fiduciary
Involving trust, particularly between a trustee and beneficiary
Tort
A civil wrong eg: assault
Contention
A point asserted as part of an argument
