Definitions Flashcards
Transpiration
Plants giving off water vapor into the atmosphere
Precipitation
Water falling in a liquid or solid state
Water Table
Upper layer of groundwater that fills spaces between rocks above an impermeable layer below
Condensation
Water vapor cooling, expanding, and changing into liquid water droplets to form clouds
Infiltration
When surface water enters soil
Percolation
The process by which water moves downward through soil under gravitational forces
Watershed
Land that runoff goes into (stream, lake, etc.)
Tributaries
Feeder streams/small streams
Divide
High land area separating different watersheds
Runoff
Water that flows over land into rivers/water running off of land
Evaporation
The process of turning liquid into vapor
Aquifer
A body of rock where large amounts of water can be stored
Stream Channel
The path a stream follows
Groundwater
Water that seeps into the ground
Aquiclude
Impermeable layers that block groundwater
Geyser
Hot spring that erupts from small vents
Continental Shelf
Part of a continent submerged under shallow water
Continental Slope
The slope between the continental shelf and the ocean floor
Current
A body of water moving in a definite direction through a surrounding body of water
Mid-Ocean Ridge
A chain of underwater mountains (seamounts)
Reservoir
A large lake used for water supply
Salinity
The dissolved salt content in a body of water
Seamount
An underwater mountain
Sinkhole
A hole in the ground caused by something collapsing overtop of it
Thermocline
The transition layer between warm water at the surface and the cool water in the deeper part of a body of water
Trench
A long cut or ditch in the ground
Drainage Basin
Where flowing surface water converges to one point (e.g. river mouth)
Benthos
Animals that spend their time under/on the ocean floor
Nekton
Animals that can swim against water currents
Plankton
Plants/animals that drift and float
System
A set of things working together as part of a mechanism/network
Water Treatment
Process to improve water quality to make it appropriate for a certain use
Snowmelt
Surface runoff produced from melting snow
Cryospheric Water
The frozen water part of the water cycle
Ice Sheet
A particularly large glacier that covers land
