Definitions Flashcards
Conductivity
Ability to conduct thermal or electrical energy
Insulative
A material that reduces or prevents the transmission of heat, sound or electricity
Brittleness
Failure of material with very little to no plastic deformation
Plasticity
Permanent deformation without failure after deforming force released
Elasticity
After a deforming force is released the material returns to its original shape and size without permanent deformation and without failure.
Ultimate tensile strength
Maximum force a material can with stand before starting to fail
Yield Strength
The force required to permanently deform a material
Strength
A materials ability to with stand a applied load without failure
Ductility
Plastic deformation under tensile load without complete failure
Malleability
Plastic deformation under a compressive load without complete failure
Rigidity
The resistance of a deforming force
Refractory
Maintaining its properties at high temperatures
Hardness
The ability of a material to with stand localised indentation wear and abrasion
Toughness
The ability to with stand a shock load or absorb input energy
Corrosion Resistance
The ability to with stand damage from environmental and chemical attacks
