Definitions Flashcards
Electrical Discharge
The process of producing light by passing an electric current through a gas
Incandescence
The production of light as a result of a high temperature
Phosphorescence
The production of light by the absorption of UV light, resulting in the emission of light over an extended period of time
Fluorescence
The production of visible light immediately after the UV light is absorbed
Chemiluminescence
The direct production of light as a result of a chemical reaction with little to no heat produced
Bioluminescence
The production of light in living organisms as the result of a chemical reaction with little to no heat produced
Diffuse reflection
The reflection of light off an irregular surface
Specular/normal reflection
The reflection of light off a shiny, smooth surface
Name the laws of reflection
1- angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection
2- the normal, incident ray, and reflection ray are all on the same plane
Non-luminous
Something that doesn’t produce its own light, and can only be seen using reflected light
Luminous
Something that produces its own light
Opaque
Transmits no incident light and absorbs or reflects it. Objects can’t be seen through the material
Transparent
Transmits all or almost all incident light. Objects can’t be seen clearly through the material
Translucent
Transmits some incident light and absorbs or reflects the rest. Objects can’t be seen through the material but not clearly
What are the wavelengths in order
