Civil law

Human Rights
The basic entitlements of every human being in the world. Rights we have simply because we are human

Translates as ‘incapable of crime’. Children cannot be held legally responsible for their actions.
Age of criminal responsibility
This is 10 years old in England and wales and refers to the age that children can be arrested or charged with crime. 10-16
Defendant
The person who is being claimed against. Also known as a “party” to the case of a “litigant”. Can choose to represent themselves.
Criminal justice system
is directly involved in apprehending, prosecuting, defending, and punishing those who are suspected or convicted of criminal offences.
Criminal law
the offences and breaches that negatively affect society as a whole, rather than just one person.
Judge
This persons wears a gown and is in charge of the court proceedings. Will make a decision on who wins the case.
Court clerk
This person keeps a record of the proceedings. Sits in the front of the judges bench.
Usher
This person keeps records of who is in court or waiting to be called as a witness. Shows those involved to the correct seat.
Claimant
This person brings the case to court. Also knows as a “party” to the case of a “litigant”. Can choose to represent themselves.
Solicitor
The legal representation for the claimant/defendant. Usually wears a business suit and will sit at the back row with their client.
Jury
A jury is made up of 12 people who are chosen at random to hear the evidence and decide if the accused is guilty or not guilty.
Crown court
Deal with serious crimes:
Murder, Rape, serious Theft, etc
Magistrate courts
Deals with less serious crimes:
Minor theft, criminal damage, public disorder and motoring offences, etc
