Definitions Flashcards
This is the process by which the body acquires and uses food.
It includes ingestion, digestion, absorption and utilization of the food.
Nutrition
Anything eaten or drunk that promotes growth protects the body against diseases, provides the body with energy maintains the body processes and may come from plants or animals
Food
These are substances found in food that promote growth, protect the body against diseases, provide the body with energy and maintain the body processes
Nutrients
Total foods and drink eaten by an individual or a group of people at a given time
Diet
A diet that provides nutrients in adequate proportions to meet the nutritional
requirements of an individual.
Balanced diet
This is a condition of the body resulting from the intake and expenditure of
nutrients.
Nutritional status
It is a condition characterized by an inappropriate quality, quantity, digestion,
absorption, or utilization of ingested nutrients
Malnutrition
Consumption of diets that do not supply adequate nutrients to meet the body’s
nutrient requirements.
Under nutrition
Consumption of diets that supply more nutrients than the body requires.
Over nutrition
The provision of relatively large doses of micronutrients, usually in the form of pills, capsules or syrups, to supply an optimal amount of a specific nutrient or nutrients.
This is called as Dietary supplement or Food supplement or Nutritional supplement
Supplementation
a set of nutrient intake values for healthy people.
These values are used for planning and assessing diets and include:
Dietary Reference Intakes (DRI)
the average daily amount of a nutrient that will maintain a specific biochemical or physiological function in half the healthy people of a given age and sex group.
Estimated Average Requirement (EAR)
the average daily amount of a nutrient considered adequate to meet the known nutrient needs of practically all healthy people; a goal for dietary intake by individuals.
Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA)
the average daily amount of a nutrient that appears sufficient to maintain a specified criterion; a value used as a guide for nutrient intake when an RDA cannot be determined.
Adequate Intake (AI)
the maximum daily amount of a nutrient that appears safe for most healthy people and beyond which there is an increased risk of adverse health effects.
Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL)
