Definitions Flashcards
System
A system is the portion of the universe under investigation
Surroundings
Universe outside the system
Boundary
The separation between surroundings and system
Zeroth Law
Two systems in thermal equilibrium with a third system
are in thermal equilibrium to each other.
First Law Of Thermodynamics
- Energy cant be created not destroyed
- Energy can only be transferred
What is constant in an adiabatic process?
No heat transfer between the system and surroundings
What is constant in an isobaric process?
No change in pressure
What is constant in an isochoric process?
No change in volume
What is constant in an isothermal process?
The temperature is constant
What is an electrolyte?
It is a substance when dissolved in water produces a solution that conducts electricity
- It contains ions
What does dissociation mean?
It is when a substance separate into constituent ions when it dissolves in a solution
What does ionization mean?
It is the formation of ions when molecular compounds are dissolved
What is an ideal electrolyte/ideal ionic solution?
It is when a solutions of ions have no attractive and repulsive forces
What’s the second law of thermodynamics?
The entropy of an isolated system increases in the course of a spontaneous reaction
What’s the third law of thermodynamics?
As the temperature approaches absolute zera, the entropy will reach a minimum constant
Enthalpy
Total energy of a system including the total internal energy and the energy it needs to make space
Entropy
The measure of randomness
Gibbs free energy
The measure of spontaneity
