Definitions Flashcards
What is an isotope?
It’s an ion with the same amount of protons but different number of neutrons.
Define relative atomic mass.
The ratio of the average mean mass of one atom of an element.
What does the relative atomic mass tell us?
It tells us the number of electrons in the outer shell.
What is a compound?
A substance that is composed of two or more separate elements.
What is an ion?
An atom or molecule with a net electric charge due to the loss or gain of 1 or more electrons.
What does monoatomic mean?
Monoatomic ions are formed by the gain or loss of electrons to the valence (outer) shell in a single atom.
What is relative formula mass?
It is the sum of relative atomic masses of the elements in the formula.
What is molar mass?
Molar mass is the mass per mole of a substance in g/mol
What is empirical formula?
It shows the simplest whole number ratio of atoms of each element in a compound.
What is molecular formula?
Molecular formula shows the number and type of atoms present of each element present in a compound.
What is stoichiometry?
It is the ratio of the amount in moles, of each substance in a chemical reaction.
