Definitions Flashcards
What is a population?
All of the organisms of one species found in a habitat
What is a community?
All the organisms of all species found in a habitat
What is an ecosystem?
The community plus all of the non-living conditions of that area.
What is a species?
Organisms that can interbreed to produce fertile offspring and share the same niche
What is species richness?
The number of different species within a habitat
What are biotic factors?
Living factors:
Presence of food/ predators
What are abiotic factors?
Nonliving factors:
Temperature / pH of soil
What is an ecological niche?
The role of a species within its habitat and its interactions with biotic and abiotic factors
What is the difference between intraspective and interspecific competition?
Intraspecifc: competition between individuals of the same species
Interspecific: competition between individuals of different species
What is an adaptation?
A feature that increases chance of survival
What is population density?
The number of individuals per unit area which can vary over time
What is a stable population?
There is no increase or decrease in number over time, the gains of the population is equal to the losses of the population
What is carrying capacity?
The maximum stable population size that an ecosystem can support.
This varies as a result of biotic and abiotic factors
