Impressionism
19th Century art movement that used small, thin, or loose brush strokes to emphasize changing light conditions, everyday life scenes, and movement
En Plein Air
Painting outdoors. This method contrasts with typical 19th century paintings that are usually done indoors
Pointalism
Technique of painting with small dots of colour to achieve an image. Sometimes uses optical effects whereby the dots of colour mix and blend when viewed from a distance
Post Impressionism
An extension of the impressionist movement. Continues use of vivid colours, thick paint, and real life subject matter - but emphasized geometric forms, distortions, and sometimes unnatural or random colours
Modern Art/Modernism
A general term for work produced from around 1860s-1970s. Is art that throws aside the traditions of the past in favour of experimentation
Non-Objective Painting
An extreme form of abstraction that does not reference specific objects, people, symbols, or subjects from the natural world
De Stijl
Dutch movement (started in 1917) in art and architecture that used pure abstraction by reducing essentials to vertical, horizontal, primary colour, black and white
Abstract Expressionism
Post WWII art movement starting in New York City in the 1940s and 1950s. Emphasized that non-objective abstract painting has the power to convey individual feelings and ideas
Painters Eleven
A group of influential Canadian painters working in the 1950s who created abstract art. They met and exhibited their work regularly and changed Canadian taste in the art world to be more accepting of abstraction.
Clement Greenberg
American writer and art critic who praised the American abstract expressionism and helping to raise their popularity through his books.
