Rhyme
Words that sound similar.
Limerick
A five line poem, usually silly on funny that uses a specific rhyme and rhythm pattern.
Rhythm
The amount of beats in a line made using syllables
Imagery
The pictures created for the reader by the poet
Stanza
A verse in poetry- a little like a paragraph.
Theme
They key idea explored by the writer in a poem, play or story. There is often more than one theme in a piece of writing.
Onomatopoeia
A word that usually sounds like what it describes
Haiku
A poem usually about nature. It’s is three lines long. The first and third lines have S syllables while the second line has seven.
Simile
A comparison between two things using the words “like”, “as” or “then” eg “ like a thunderbolt”
Alliteration
Using words that begin with the same letters or sounds
Metaphor
Comparing two things without using “like, as, or.”
Narrator
The voice or character who tells the story
Setting
The time and place where the book is set
Character
Person in the story
Protagonist
The main character of the story
Plot
The story line, what happens in the story
Personification
Human quality “the bench ground under the children”
Anamatapaya
Words that sound like what there describing “squish, smack, loop.”
Imagery
Pictures in mind
