Definitions Flashcards
Element
Pure substance made up of only one type of atom
Compound
Pure substance made up of two or more different types of atoms chemically bonded
Mixture
2 or more different substances that are not chemically bonded and can be separated by physical means
Molecule
2 or more atoms covalently bonded
Monatomic molecule
A molecule consisting of only one atom-noble gases
Diatomic molecule
A molecule consisting of only two atoms of the same type
Ionic bond
The electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions
Covalent bond
The electrostatic attraction between shared pair of electrons and the nuclei of bonded atoms
Solute
A substance that is dissolved by a solvent to form a solution
Solvent
The liquid in which a solute is dissolved in to form a solution. E.g. water
Solution
A mixture of solute dissolved in a solvent
Saturated
The description for a solution when no more solute will dissolve in a solvent at a specific temperature
Filtrate
The liquid/solution that passed through the filter paper in filtration
Residue
The insoluble solid left behind after filtration
Homologous series
A group of organic molecules with the same function group and general formula
