Definitions Flashcards
Multi-barrier approach
Looks at each drinking water system from source to tap to make sure all known and potential hazards are identified and addressed
Type 1 septic system
Treatment by a septic tank and dispersal field only
TC
a group of bacteria that are naturally found on plants and in soils, water and intestines of humans and warm-blooded animals. Widespread in env and can be used as one of the tools to determine the efficacy of the system
E.coli
a species of bacteria found in intestines of humans and animals. Present in feces and can be easily measured in water which makes it a indicator of fecal contamination. Pathogens in feces pose the greatest risk to public health
Biofilms
Layer of microorganisms contained in a matrix or slime layer which forms on surfaces in contact with water. Presence can indicate lack of proper disinfection and can be a reservoir for pathogens
