Definitions Flashcards
Define a eukaryotic cell
A eukaryotic cell is a type of cell that has a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles
Define a prokaryotic cell
prokaryotic cell is a type of cell that hasn’t got a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles, usually found in bacteria and archaea
What is an enzyme?
An enzyme is a biological molecule, typically a protein, that acts as a catalyst to speed up chemical reactions in living organisms
What is mitosis?
Mitosis is the process of cell division in which a single cell divides into two identical daughter cells, each with the same number of chromosomes as the parent cell
1) Interphase
The cell grows and prepares for division by replicating its DNA and organelles
2)Prophase
Chromosomes condense, the nuclear membrane breaks down, and spindle fibers begin to form
3) Metaphase
Chromosomes line up along the center of the cell, called the metaphase plate, and spindle fibers attach to the centromeres of each chromosome
4) Anaphase
Sister chromatids separate and are pulled apart toward opposite ends of the cell by the spindle fibers
5) Telophase
Chromosomes reach opposite poles of the cell, the nuclear membrane reforms around each set of chromosomes, and the chromosomes begin to decondense
6) Cytokinesis
The cell membrane pinches inwards, dividing the cytoplasm and organelles into two separate daughter cells
What is the order of the cell cycle?
- Interphase 2. Prophase 3. Metaphase 4. Anaphase 5. Telophase 6. Cytokinesis
