Definitions Flashcards
SLACK TIDES
tidal strength not exceeding 0.5 knot.
SLACK WATER
interval when the speed of the tidal stream is very
weak or zero, for example during the period of reversal between ebb and flood
streams.
EBB TIDE
tidal stream flowing in a West to East direction.
FLOOD TIDE
tidal stream flowing in a East to West direction.
DAYLIGHT HOURS
0630 hours to 1900 hours.
Towing
any tug operation connected with holding, pushing, pulling, moving
or attending to any vessel.
NO RESTRICTION
no constraint caused by the rate of tidal
stream. The height of tide has not been taken into consideration.
OPTIMUM
normal operational tonnage
MAXIMUM
upper limits of optimum beyond which berthing is not accepted.
UKC vessels greater
than 3000 GT
1.0 metre UKC for all locations (except
Container Terminals where this requirement could be reduced to 0.9 metre. Where
the depth alongside is lesser than the controlling depth in the approaches, the
UKC could be further reduced to 0.6 metre).
UKC vessels of
3000 GT or less
0.6 metre UKC is required. For vessels alongside, a 0.3 metre
UKC would be required for emergency manoeuvres.
VLCC
a tanker of more than 280 metres in length or
exceeding 75,000 GT.
Height of vessel
the height of the vessel measured vertically from the
waterline of the vessel to the highest point of the vessel including its cargo,
structure or equipment on board.
