Definitions Flashcards
Definitely population
The whole set of items that are of interest to
Define a sample
A subset of the population intende to represent the population
What is a sampling unit
Each individual within the pop that can be sampled
What is a sampling frame
A list of all the units in the pop
Define a statistic
A value calculated from a sample data e.g the mean
What is a parameter
A value calculated from the pop. Data
What is a census
Data collected from the entire population
How do you carry out simple random sampling
Each item in the sampling frame has an identifying number and a random number generator is used to select the items
How do you carry out systematic sampling
Required elements are chosen at regular intervals so you take the element after every k number
Where k= pop size/samp size
How do you carry out stratified sampling
Pop is divided in groups (strata) and a sample is carried out in each group.
The sample size is then divided by the population
When is stratifies sampling used
When the population is naturally divided into groups
How do you carry out quota sampling
The pop is divided into groups according to characteristics, it is used to reflect the groups proportion in the whole group
What is opportunity sampling
It is a sample taken from ppl who are available at the time of study and who fit the criteria
How do you carry out cluster sampling
Split the pop into clusters that you would expect to be similar to each other then take a sample from each cluster
List the three random sampling types
Simple random sampling
Systematic sampling
Stratified sampling
