Definitions Flashcards
What is static electricity
When there is a build up or shortage of electrical charge ( electrons) on the surface of a material
Static
Built up charges that don’t move
Insulators
Materials that Do NOT allow electrons to flow through them easily
Conductors
Materials that allow electrons to flow through them easily
Charging by contact
Explains why you get shocked when you touch a metal object
Grounded
What it’s connected to the earth through a connecting wire
Current electricity
Is the movement of electric charge through a conductor in a controlled way
Current electricity (2)
•Is the flow of electrons
•Moved easily through a conductor poorly through a insulator
• requires a source of electrical energy to create a flow of electrons
Static electricity
The movement of electrons in an uncontrolled way
Conductivity
A measure of materials ability to conduct electricity
Electric circuits
A continuous path in which electrons can flow
Load
A part of a circuit that converts electrical energy to other forms of energy
Switch
A device that controls the flow of electrons by opening, or closing the circuit
Electrical energy
That energy provided by the flow of electrons in a circuit
Current
The amount of electrons passing through a point in a circuit
