Definitions Flashcards
What is a Strong Acid?
An acid that ionizes completely in water
Eg Sulphuric Acid (H+)
What is a weak acid
An acid that only partially ionized in water
Eg Vinegar (H+)
What is a Strong Alkali?
A strong alkali fully ionizes in water eg Sodium Hydroxide (H-)
What is a weak Alkali?
A weak alkali partially ionizes in water
Eg Ammonium Hydroxide (H-)
What are acids?
Acids are proton donors, so when in water, they release (H+)
What are Bases?
Bases are proton acceptors which means they release (H+)

Properties of acids
Sour taste
Chemical properties of acids
Reacts with metals to form salt and hydrogen.
Reacts with bases to form salt and water.
Reacts with carbonates to form salt, water and CO2
Ionic Precipitation Steps
- React aq solutions of 2 different salts, each containing half of the ions needed for the insoluble salt.
- Filter the residue
- Rinse with distilled water
- Dry with filter paper or in an oven
Titration involves…
Acid + alkali = salt + water
Titration Steps
- Pipette alkali into conical flask
- Add 2-3 drops of indicator to flask
- Fill burette with acid using funnel
- Titrate acid against alkali until indicator changes colour (note the volume)
- Repeat all steps except 2, using volume from step 4
- Evaporate to dryness or saturation
- Rinse with cold water
- Dry with filter paper
