definitions Flashcards
Longshore drift
the movement of material along the beach by swash and backwash.
currents
the parts of a beach, moving continuously in a certain direction
erosion
the wearing away of Earths’s surface by factors such as wind and water
desposition
the process where the material being transported by a wave is desposited
swash
the act of waves carrying sand/pebbles/debris. ont the shore
backwash
the movement of water back down the beach to the sea
tides
very long-period waves that move through the ocean in response to the gravity pull of the moon.
constructive/destructive waves
constructive waves are those that build up sediment on the beach (deposition) ad destructive waves are those that carry sediment away from the beach (erosion).
biodiversity
all the different kinds of life you can find in one area
stakeholders
a person or group of people with an interest or concern in something
over-development
the process of building too many houses, buildings, and infrastructure on a area of land
corrosion
a process of erosion whereby rocks and soil are mechanically removed or worn away by abrasive action of solid materials being moved along by wind, waves, running watterr.
What are some management strategies for Redhead Beach?
Redhead Beach has many management strategies in place. Walkways to the beach with rubber matting, as well as ‘dune fences’ to trap sand and help build the dunes have been implemented as a way to reduce erosion in the dunes. There are signs, fences, and public bins everywhere to reduce littering and trespassing on areas which shouldn’t be accessed. A ‘land care’ group also helps with the management of this beach and its dunes. In the dunes, these volunteers revegetate the plants as well as get rid of invasive species and weeds. A ‘habitat corridor’ has been implemented to close the gap between industrialised areas in order to allow migrating animals across. To trap and filter storm water before going back into the ocean, a ‘gross pollutant trap’ was added to Redhead Beach as well.
