Definitions Flashcards
What is a pure substance?
In chemistry, for a substance to be pure, it contains one type of particles.
What is a mixture?
A mixture is a material made up of two or more different substances which are physically combined.
Elements definition
Matter which contains one type of atoms.
Compound definition
Matter which contains more than one type of molecule.
What is a homogenous mixture?
A homogeneous mixture is one that’s mixed or blended together so well that all of the ingredients will not separate out, even over time. It’s composition is uniform/ constant throughout the mixture.
What is a heterogeneous mixture
A heterogeneous mixture is a mixture made of two or more substances that are combined (mixed) together but not dissolved together. It is not the same consistency throughout and can be separated into its original parts.
What is an atom?
An atom is the smallest unit into which matter can be divided without the release of electrically charged particles.
What is a molecule?
A molecule is two or more atoms connected by chemical bonds, which form the smallest unit of a substance that retains the composition and properties of that substance.
