Definitions Flashcards
ACKNOWLEDGING DEVICE
The button, pedal or switch that must be operated to prevent a Train Control Apparatus initiated penalty application of train breaks when the cab signals changes to a more restrictive aspect or as required to prevent an alerter system penalty break application
ALERTER SYSTEM
A safety device that ensures operator alertness and requires periodic acknowledgment to prevent a penalty break application.
ANGLE COCK
The pneumatic shut off valve for the break pipe connections between units other than M-series equipment in a train consist. In “open”position, the valve handle is aligned with the pipe.
AUDIBLE INDICATOR
The device that provides an audible annunciation, when the cab signal changes to a more restrictive aspect, when the train exceed the speed authorized by Train Control, Apparatus, or when the alertness system is activated.
AUTOMATIC AIR BRAKE
The primary break system of a train in which the reduction of brake pipe pressure will apply the brakes.
AUTOMATIC TRAIN CONTROL (ATC)
A train control apparatus that initiates a penalty break application if the engineer fails to reduce speed in conjunction with the signal indication.
AUTOMATIC TRAIN STOP
A train control apparatus that initiate a penalty break application if the engineer fails to acknowledge a more restrictive cab signal aspect.
** BRAKE CYLINDER (BC)**
The device in which compressed air acts on a piston to transmit a pneumatic forced to apply break forces to the wheel
BRAKE PIPE (BP)
The system of piping including branch pipes, angle cocks, cut out cocks, dirt collectors, hose and hose couplings, used for connecting the units of a consist in order to trainline, air pressure for the operation of the automatic brake system.
BRAKE PIPE GRADIENT
The difference in the break pipe pressure between the lead locomotive and rear end of a train.
CAB SIGNAL DAILY TEST
A test of the Train Control Apparatus performed by a QMP.
CAB SIGNAL DEPARTURE TEST
A test of the Train Control Apparatus performed by the locomotive engineer.
CLASS 1 BRAKE TEST
A comprehensive passenger train brake system test and inspection performed by a Qualified Maintenance Person (QMP) to ensure that the air brake system is 100% effective
** CLASS 1A BRAKE TEST**
A brake test and inspection performed by a Qualified Person who may be a member of the road crew, to determine the air brakes on each unit of a passenger train consist apply and release in response to train line commands.
** CLASS 2 BRAKE TEST**
Test and inspection of braking system performed by a QP or QMP to ensure break pipe integrity in continuity from the controlling unit of a train to the rear end of a passenger train.
