Definitions Flashcards

1
Q

Biological Indicator

A

spore test using commercially available preparation of heat-resistant spores used to verify the sterilizer is working properly. (has temp, pressure , and time req.) Done biweekly, spore test strips sent to lab and results must be kept for min 1 year.

Q

Bowie-Dick test

A

A test that determines whether a dynamic air removal type sterilizer has properly evacuated air from the load, unlike integrators which provide information about the conditions necessary to destroy microorganisms

Q

Chemical Indicator

A

A system that reveals a change in one or more predefined process variables based on a chemical or physical change resulting from exposure to the process. Each package must include a level 3, and each loas must contain a Type 5 to indicate all parameters were met. MEthyl MEthacrylate

Q

Non- critical equipment

A

Equipment that comes into contact with intact skin only, but has a potential for accidental cuts- use intermediate level disinfectant
Equipment that does not come into contact with person or only with intact skin- low level disinfectant

Q

Disinfection

A

Process that kills or destroys most disease producing micro-organisms. With the exception of high numbers of bacterial spores. 3 levels, must be cleaned before being disinfected.

NPN

A

Natural product number assigned by health canada after a product has been assessed and determined to be safe, effective, and of high quality.

17
Q

Process challenge device

A

a test device intended to provide a challenge to the sterilization process that is equal to or greater than the challenge posed by the most difficult item routinely processed. Ex- BI test pacts

18
Q

Reprocessing

A

The steps performed to prepare reusable equipment for use

19
Q

Skin antiseptic

A

A substance that inactivates microorganisms or inhibits their growth on skin. Used to prepare skin before invasive procedure.

20
Q

Spaulding’s classification

A

Describes the level of reprocessing to used for medical equipment or instruments based on their intended or actual use

21
Q

Sterilization

A

Method of reprocessing recommended for all critical items. Capable of destroying all forms of microbial life.

22
