Q

Fire Partition

A

Fire-resistive component to separate dwelling units in R-2 construction, guest rooms in R-1, & tenant spaces in covered mall buildings; used as corridor walls. Required to have minimum of 1 hr fire protection rated construction, except in certain circumstances. Similar to fire barriers, but not as strict.

Q

Fire-Protection Rating

A

Period of time an opening assembly (door or window) can confine a fire or maintain its integrity, when tested with NFPA 252, ANSI/UL 10B, or ANSI/ UL 10C for doors, and NFPA 257 for windows. Assembly that requires a fire protection rating must withstand fire exposure and thermal shock as would an assembly that required a fire-resistance rating, but it need not withstand heat transmission as walls, columns, and floors do.

Q

Fire-resistance Rating

A

Period of time a building component (wall, floor, roof, beam, or column) can confine a fire or maintain its structural integrity (or both) when tested with ASRM E119, Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials. Different from Fire Rating

Q

Noncombustible

A

material that will not ignite and burn with subjected to a fire. Only if tested with ASTM E136, Standard Test Method for Behavior of Materials in a Vertical Tube Furnace at 750 degrees C, or if it has a structural base of noncombustible material with a surfacing not more than 1/8” thick that has a flame-spread index no greater than 50

Q

Trim

A

Picture molds, chair rails, baseboards, handrails, door and window frames, and similar decorative or protective materials used in fixed applications
