Definitions Flashcards
What is the definition of a Class I molar relationship?
The Mesiobuccal cusp of the Upper first molar occludes with the buccal groove of the lower first molar
What is the definition of a Class II Molar relationship?
The mesiobuccal cusp of the Upper first molar occludes anterior to the buccal groove of the lower first molar
What is the definition of a Class III molar relationship?
The mesiobuccal cusp of the upper first molar occludes posterior to the buccal groove of the lower first molar
What is the definition of a Class I incisor relationship?
The lower incisor edge occludes on or immediately below the cingulum plateau of the Upper Central incisor
What is the definition of a Class II Div I incisor relationship
The lower incisor edge occludes posterior to the cingulum plateau of the Upper Central incisors. The upper central incisors are proclined
-increased overjet
What is the definition of a Class II Div II incisor relationship?
The lower incisor edge occludes posterior to the cingulum plateau of the Upper Central incisors. The upper central incisors are retroclined.
-reduced or increased Overjet
-lateral incisors proclined
What is the definition of a Class III incisor relationship?
The lower incisor edge occludes anterior to the cingulum plateau of the Upper Central incisors
What is the definition of an Overbite?
It is the vertical overlap of the Upper incisors over the lower incisors.
What is the definition of an Overjet?
It is the horizontal overlap of the Upper Central incisors over the lower central incisors
What is the definition of Anterior open bite
No vertical overlap of the Upper and Lower incisors when teeth are in occlusion
What is the definition of Posterior Open Bite
No occlusal contact of the Upper and Lower posterior teeth when teeth are in occlusion
What is the definition of a cross bite?
Abnormal relationship between opposing teeth in buccopalatal or buccolingual direction
What is the definition of Malocclusion?
Upper and Lower teeth are outside of ‘normal’ range when in occlusion
What is the definition of Leeway space?
The lower difference in diameter between the primary canine, 1st and 2nd Molars and their secondary counterparts
What is the definition of retention?
The holding of teeth following orthodontic treatment to maintain the result achieved at the end of treatment
What is the definition of relapse?
The return of teeth towards their pretreatment position at the end of treatment
What is the definition of Hypodontia?
Congenital absence of one or more primary or secondary teeth
What is the definition of Oligodontia?
Absence of 6 or more teeth
What is the definition of Anodontia?
Total loss of all teeth
What is the definition of Supernumerary teeth?
Tooth or tooth like structure which develops alongside the normal series of teeth
What is the definition of impaction?
Failure of eruption of a tooth/canine due to crowding or an obstruction within the dental arch
What is the definition of Dental Panoramic Tomography? (DPT)
A radiograph that gives a 2 dimensional view of the Maxilla and Mandible
What is the definition of a Cephalometric Radiograph?
True lateral view of the skull. A 2 dimensional image presenting the skull and facial bones
What is the definition of Upper Standard Occlusal radiograph?
A radiograph taken of the anterior part of the maxilla and the anterior teeth
What is the definition of Orthodontics?
A branch of dentistry concerned with dento facial anomalies, craniofacial malformations, and correction of irregularities of the teeth
What is the definition of Occlusion?
The arrangement and position of the Upper and Lower teeth when in the contact position
What is the definition of Neutral Zone?
Position where the forces of the lip, cheek and tongue are neutral
